Engineering angle
What does it take to keep a real production education platform reliable — not just launched — across new features, content changes and everyday support requests?
Problem
Mahder Academy needed a real, production web platform for course delivery — not a landing page — covering enrollment, content access and ongoing feature changes as the academy grows, without a dedicated in-house engineering team.
Why it matters
An education platform lives or dies on reliability during real usage: enrollment, login and content delivery have to keep working as courses, instructors and traffic change, which means the job doesn't end at launch.
Constraints
- Small team — the platform needed to be simple enough to maintain and extend without a large engineering org behind it
- Real users and real payments — auth, enrollment and access control had to be correct from day one, not iterated on live
- Ongoing content changes — new courses, pages and features are added continuously, so the architecture had to support frequent updates without instability
Approach
Built as a full-stack Next.js application with a Node.js API layer, covering authentication, course enrollment, content access control, and an admin-facing path for managing courses. Since launch, the engagement has continued as ongoing maintenance and support — shipping feature requests, fixing issues as they surface in production, and keeping the platform stable as usage grows.
Experiments
- Iterating on the enrollment and access-control flow based on real user friction after launch
- Refining the admin/content-management path to reduce turnaround time on new course additions
Results
- Live, in-production platform serving 100+ students across 11+ courses at mahderacademy.com
- Ongoing maintenance relationship — feature additions and support handled continuously post-launch, not a one-time delivery
Lessons
- Most of the real engineering work in a product I co-own happens after launch — maintainability matters as much as initial architecture
- A simple, well-understood stack is worth more than a clever one when you're the person who has to keep it running
