Engineering angle

How do you take a pipeline built to move 1.2M+ transaction records and turn it into a system real users — billing, customer management, payments — can depend on?

Problem

Billing systems generate large volumes of transactional data that need to move from raw source records to a reliable, queryable state fast enough to support real customer-management and payment workflows — not just a batch report run once a night.

Why it matters

A billing platform is only as trustworthy as its data pipeline: if transformation is slow, manual, or error-prone, every downstream feature — invoicing, customer support, payment reconciliation — inherits that risk.

Constraints

  • 1.2M+ transaction records to ingest, clean and transform without a dedicated data-platform team
  • Billing, customer and payment logic all need to stay consistent across the same underlying data as the schema evolves
  • The pipeline and the application serving it had to be built and owned by one engineer, end to end

Approach

Engineered scalable ETL pipelines in Python and PostgreSQL to ingest and transform the transaction dataset, then built RESTful APIs (FastAPI, Django) on top of the resulting schema, with a React and Streamlit frontend integrating billing, customer management and payment logic end to end.

Experiments

  • Profiling the ETL pipeline to find and remove the slowest transformation steps
  • Iterating on schema design to keep billing, customer and payment queries fast at 1.2M+ record scale

Results

  • 1.2M+ transaction records processed through the pipeline
  • 34% improvement in processing speed after optimization
  • End-to-end platform: ETL → PostgreSQL → REST API → React/Streamlit UI, covering billing, customer management and payments

Lessons

  • At six-figure-plus record volumes, schema and query design decisions made early in the pipeline show up directly as either speed or slowness in the application layer later
  • Owning a data pipeline end-to-end — from raw ingestion to the UI a customer-facing team actually uses — surfaces integration problems that a pipeline-only or frontend-only view would miss
